Update: Ordinance 25-103 did fail (did not go through) at the meeting! So we will not have building permits required out here for over 480 sqft.
Hello Chickaloon Community! We had a lot to go over at this month’s February meeting, here are a few highlights everyone needs to be made aware of immediately! See below:
The Mat-Su borough is trying to impose the requirement of building permits outside of city limits which would include all of us. The meeting for this is on the 17th, the meeting starts at 6pm in Palmer. Anyone can attend (see photo for details regarding meeting).
Details:
Any building or building modification of 480 sq ft or larger in the borough, outside the city limits (and Port District), would require a building permit approved by an authorized individual in the Planning Department. Buildings within 75 feet of a watercourse or water body would also be included – (this part already existed). If your application was not approved, you would need to plead your case before the Board of Adjustments and Appeals. Fees are determined by the Assembly.
Major Change from original (17.02 to 17.07)
Everyone would now be required to get a building permit (see Details above for specifics
Here is additional info from Mike Bowles:
Ordinance 25-103 is on the February 17 agenda under unfinished business. The platting board unanimously voted against this ordinance. I have also received an overwhelming amount of correspondence in opposition to this ordinance. Based on these reasons, I will be a “no” vote on this ordinance.
Other ordinances of interest on the Feb 17 agenda for introduction:
1. Ord 26-027. After the meeting two weeks ago, where fellow residents of District 1 felt forced into having to pay for a natural gas line that they did not want, I spoke with a couple of assembly members about ensuring this doesn’t happen again with such a small percentage of community approval. Assemblywoman Nowers headed up ordinance 26-027 which I am cosponsoring.
2. Ord 26-024. Assemblyman Sumner noticed some language that needed to be addressed concerning tax assessments being raised if residents request a reevaluation. Assemblyman Gamble and I agreed and cosponsored ordinance 26-024.
Finally, I will be introducing an ordinance to repeal and replace areawide property taxes with a 6 1/2% sales tax in March. That ordinance has not been published yet but as soon as it is, I will get it out to district one community councils.

Traffic Control starting Sunday starting at the stop sign (Fish Lake and E Chickaloon) until Drill Lake
Prep work by ASRC will begin 2/16 along the first mile of E. Chickaloon Road starting from the Fish Lake Rd intersection. There will be ongoing work activity from ~2/20 – 3/20 including traffic control as needed.
The work is to prepare the road for the equipment going back to Drill Lake. They need to remove some trees and do some road work in order to get the equipment back to the well. At the stop sign (the T of Fish Lake and E Chickaloon Rd) the road will be down to 1 lane of traffic and controlled by a worker with sign. They will be letting traffic through of course, but expect to potentially be stopped while traveling through that section of road (from the T to Drill Lake).
If you have questions or concerns you may reach Amanda Dial with ASRC. She has been at every meeting for about the last year (please see previous meeting minutes for previous updates and sequence of events). Please contact ASRC Project Manager, Amanda Dial 907-382-0124, with any questions.
